I stepped out front and heard the call of a Northern Flicker, but couldn't spot one in the trees. Later when I came in, I saw a pair foraging just outside our back door. I grabbed the camera and shot from inside the window, my only option since any sound would have caused these skittish birds to bolt. The male below was the closest.
I had seen them forage here before, and also pecking on our old willow tree trunk.
We have resident robins, a lot of crows, perhaps two pairs of rufous hummingbirds, and seasonally some chestnut-backed chickadees. Also a mallard duck pair visited us in the spring, but I don't think our small wetland was large enough for them.
We also have a game trail through our yard, regularly used by a raccoon and a coyote pup.
